Cataract
A cataract is the clouding of the eye lens. When the patient sees something, light rays travel to the eye through the pupil and focus on the retina (a layer of light-sensitive cells in the back of the eye) by means of lens. The lens should be transparent in order to focus light properly on the retina. The condition of opacity or clouding of the lens is called cataract.
What are its causes?
Factors that may accelerate cataract formation are:
- Diabetes
- Eye inflammation
- Eye injury
- Family history of cataracts
- Prolonged use of corticosteroids (taken orally) or certain other medications
- Radiation exposure
- Smoking abuse
- Surgery from another eye problem
- Too much exposure to ultraviolet light (sunlight)
- Severe myopia
In many cases, the cause of cataract is unknown
