Oculoplastics
Comprehensive eye health includes healthy eyes and healthy eyelids.
The most common problems in eyelids are:
- Excessive skin in upper eyelids
- Drooping eyelids (Ptosis)
- Lower eyelids turning outwards (ectropion) and lower eyelid folding inward (entropion)
These problems, for those suffering from this condition, may cause eye discomfort, limited vision and may affect the eye’s appearance. Fortunately, Vision Méndez treats these problems with safe, reliable and simple surgical procedures.
Ptosis: May be caused from birth (congenital) or by the passage of time (involuntary). Congenital ptosis in children may cause involuntary movement of the head from side to side in order to see. Adults that develop ptosis have limited central and side vision. If ptosis is in one eye, the problem will show an imbalance in sight and aesthetically in the patient. Surgery will allow improvement in the patient’s vision, in addition to enhancing his/her physical image.
Drooping eyelid: With the passage of time, many people develop excess skin in the eyelids. The eyelid skin is the thinnest of the body, which makes it more prone to hang and wrinkle. Excess upper eyelid skin may cause limitations for side vision. The same problem causes bags under the eyes that give the appearance of fatigue. The excess skin in both upper and lower eyelids may be removed by means of a surgical procedure called blepharoplasty. This surgery improves side sight as well as physical appearance in patients, who afterwards may show a new and improved young fresh look. In addition, the fatty tissue is removed in the same surgery if needed.
Ectropion: Stretching of the skin of the eyelids due to age may result in the inside of the eyelid “spilling or pouring” out. This condition is known as ectropion. It may also be caused by a burn, wound or an infection treated inadequately. Ectropion can cause dry eye, excessive tearing, red eye, as well as sensitivity to light and wind. Surgery reverses the effects of this disease in addition to placing the eyelid back into its normal condition.
Entropion is the condition of the lower eyelid turning inwards towards the conjunctiva (eye). This condition is more age related, but may also be caused by an infection treated inadequately or from constantly manipulating the eye and/or eyelids. When the lid goes inward or constantly rubs the eye, eyelashes and skin will cause irritation, therefore, causing red eye, tearing, infections and sensitivity to light and wind. In severe cases, the constant irritation of the cornea (window of the eye) may result in serious damage to vision.
